La Fortuna, at the foot of Arenal Volcano, is almost always the first stop for visitors to Costa Rica. It is about 125 km from Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO). Here we explain each way to get there and which suits your trip.

1. Private transfer (the most comfortable option)

An exclusive vehicle for your group leaves when you land and takes you door to door in about 3 hours. Ideal for families, groups and those who value their time. The driver monitors your flight, so delays are not a problem.

2. Shared shuttle

Cheaper per person, but it picks up travelers at several hotels and can take up to 5 hours. It runs on fixed schedules, not around your flight.

3. Public bus

The cheapest option. It requires getting to San José, taking a bus to Ciudad Quesada and then another to La Fortuna. It can take 5-6 hours with transfers and is impractical with lots of luggage.

4. Rental car

It gives total freedom, but means driving unfamiliar mountain roads plus adding insurance and parking. Many travelers prefer to save driving for local excursions.
